How to Tell If You Need a Windshield Repair vs Replacement

Is your auto-glass cracked, chipped, or damaged in any way? Here’s how to know whether you require a simple windshield repair or a full replacement.

Windshields are one of the most important features of your vehicle. While many people may not realize just how crucial this auto-glass part is to your safety, you must remember that they are designed to:

  • protect you from any outside elements.
  • lower your risk of injury or death during an accident.
  • prevent the roof from falling in during an accident.
  • give you an unobstructed view of the road ahead.

Windshield Repair vs Replacement: Which Do You Need?

One of the most common questions we get in our Calgary auto-glass shop is: Do I need a windshield replacement or a repair?

At Diamond Glass, we believe it’s always better to try and repair your existing windshield first, before doing any replacements, but this may not always be possible. Here are some of the things you need to know about a windshield repair vs replacement:

What is a windshield repair?

A windshield repair involves the application of a clear resin that cures into the outer layer of the windshield glass. It is typically done in an attempt to restore the integrity (strength) of the glass and to eliminate any faulty appearance.

When done properly, a windshield repair can leave a smooth, invisible surface, and prevent the crack/chip from spreading or creating further damage.

What is a windshield replacement?

A windshield replacement is the complete removal of a vehicle’s windshield, old bonding agents, trims, and gaskets, and the reapplication of them, along with the installation of a new windshield.

When installed correctly, a windshield replacement should restore the vehicle’s safety to its original manufacturer’s standards (or better).

3 Ways to Tell If You Need a Windshield Repair or Replacement

A crack or a chip in your windshield doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll need to replace the whole thing! It’s possible that you can get away with a simple repair. The following ways are tests that can help you determine which type of auto-glass service you need:

1. The Size Of The Damage

The size of the damaged area on your windshield is a major factor in whether it needs to be replaced or if it can be repaired. Typically, if the amount of damage is less than the size of a dollar bill, it can be repaired.

2. The Location Of The Damage

The placement of the windshield damage is also important. If the chip has occurred on the part of the windshield that is in view of the driver, then you will need to replace your auto glass. Even if it’s a small crack or chip, if it’s in your line of sight, it may leave a mark that will impair your view of the road.

3. The Amount Of Damage

A small amount of damage makes it more likely that your windshield can simply be repaired. For example, if you have three or fewer chips, then it’s likely your auto-glass can be repaired. However, any more than that can make your windshield more susceptible to shattering, which is why it would need a full replacement.
